Choosing a subwoofer

18" or 15"?

An 18" subwoofer goes deeper and louder, which suits music, DJs and concerts. A 15" sub is more compact and enough for smaller rooms and speech-led events.

How many per speaker?

A common starting point is one subwoofer for every two full-range speakers, and more for dance music. KYAF works it out for the room and the music.

Powered or passive?

Powered subs have the amplifier inside and set up quickly. Passive subs are driven from an amplifier rack, which suits fixed installations.

Where to put them

Placed together and on the floor, subwoofers give more bass and fewer dead spots. Spread out, they can cancel each other.
